GO Wellington community partnership connects sea and city.

From today, GO Wellington has a new community partnership and an exciting new-look bus on Wellington’s streets.

The latest addition to GO Wellington’s highly visual community branded buses will help raise awareness of the Island Bay Marine Education Centre and the work it does.

By joining in this partnership with the centre, GO Wellington is showing its support for the environment, in general, and for this hardworking local organization, in particular.

“This new cobranded bus and our relationship with the Island Bay Marine Education centre is part of our destination based, conservation focussed portfolio of partnerships that GO Wellington has undertaken in Wellington city, which included Zelandia (the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary) and the Wellington Zoo,” says Bruce Emson, CEO NZ Bus.

“GO Wellington's other community partnerships are with the Wellington Museums’ Trust and the Neonatal Trust,” says Mr Emson.

“Partnering local conservation organisations is a natural choice for GO Wellington. Our customers say that one of the primary reasons they choose to travel by bus is because they care about the environment.”

“Taking a bus instead of a car is a green choice,” continues Mr Emson. “And, GO Wellington is working hard to making it even greener. We have a three year committed to invest in our fleet. For example, our new-generation, larger trolley buses, being electric are emission free. Our new diesel buses, which will meet the latest European Union emission standards, will emit 60 to 90 per cent less carbon emissions than the buses they replace. And, a full bus equals 50 fewer cars on the road.”

Dr Victor Anderlini, Wellington Marine Conservation Trust Chairperson, says that the purpose of the Island Bay Marine Education Centre is to inspire people, especially children, to look after our marine environment.
“We try to do this through our education programmes, our public open days, our living displays and our community awareness campaigns,” says Dr Anderlini.

“Our partnership with GO Wellington is about both organisations strengthening our connections with the rest of the city. And, of course, we encourage people to use the cheapest, easiest and greenest way of getting to Island Bay to visit the Marine Education Centre – the bus.”

“I’m sure if you’re in Wellington you’ll come across the newly branded ’Octobus’ soon. It will be hard to miss! We believe it will be a very effective way of letting more Wellingtonians and visitors know about our Island Bay attraction. We’re looking forward to a long and mutually supportive partnership with GO Wellington.”
